The Cost of Doing Nothing: Why Avoiding Hard Conversations with Aging Parents Can Cost You Time, Energy, and Money

Updated: May 1

When people find out that I help support individuals in the sandwich generation they often say, "Oh my parents aren't there yet but I am glad you are here for when they will be".

We avoid it. We tell ourselves, We’ll get to it soon. We assume there’s more time. But when it comes to planning for our aging parents, doing nothing comes at a cost—a cost measured in stress, time, energy, and often, thousands of dollars lost.

I’ve seen it happen. Families scrambling when a parent suddenly can’t make decisions. Siblings arguing over what Mom would have wanted. Financial documents nowhere to be found. Medical choices left up to strangers because no one had power of attorney. And the hardest part? The emotional toll of making urgent decisions without a roadmap.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. My goal is to motivate you by showing you what is at stake if you wait too long and how taking small steps now can save you and your family headaches and heartaches later.

1. The Financial Cost: Lost Money & Unnecessary Expenses

Not having financial affairs in order can be expensive. Without access to bank accounts, investments, or insurance policies, you could be stuck in a legal battle just to pay your parent’s bills.

💰 Real Cost Example:

  • Without power of attorney, you may need to go through a costly court process (often $3,000-$10,000) to gain access to financial accounts.

  • If your parent doesn’t have a will or trust, assets may be tied up in probate, which can take months or even years—costing legal fees, delaying inheritances, and creating unnecessary stress.

  • Bills get missed, accounts go into collections, and late fees pile up simply because no one has the authority to manage them.

✅ What to Do Now:

  • Have a financial conversation with your parents: Where do they bank? Do they have a financial advisor? Where are their important documents?

  • Make sure they have a durable power of attorney (POA) so someone they trust can handle finances if needed.

2. The Time Cost: Hours of Chaos & Confusion

When there’s no plan, everything takes longer. Instead of focusing on your parent’s care, you’re spending hours searching for paperwork, making phone calls, and untangling financial and legal red tape.

Real Cost Example:

  • Without medical directives, doctors may be forced to make critical decisions without knowing your parent’s wishes.

  • If there’s no estate plan, sorting out assets and legal matters can take months or years—often while dealing with grief.

  • Time gets lost tracking down passwords, policies, and essential documents that could have been organized ahead of time.

✅ What to Do Now:

  • No matter what age you parent is START the conversation. DM me @BarbaraStratte for my FREE Starting the Conversation download

  • Ask if your parents have a healthcare directive that outlines their medical wishes.

  • Consolidate important documents (bank info, insurance policies, legal papers) in one secure place and make sure key family members know where to find them.

3. The Emotional Cost: Stress, Family Tension & Decision Fatigue

One of the biggest, most heartbreaking costs of doing nothing? The emotional strain it puts on families.

💔 Real Cost Example:

  • Siblings who were once close end up fighting over decisions because nothing was discussed in advance.

  • The guilt and anxiety of wondering if you made the right choice for your parent’s care.

  • The exhaustion of making life-altering decisions under pressure when emotions are already running high.

✅ What to Do Now:

  • Have open, honest conversations now—before a crisis forces the issue.

  • Make sure everyone is on the same page about care preferences, financial plans, and legal documents.

  • Consider bringing in a neutral third party (a financial planner, elder care expert, or attorney) to help navigate these discussions.

The Bottom Line: Doing Nothing Costs More Than Taking Action

I get it—these conversations aren’t easy. But I promise, a little discomfort now can save you immeasurable stress, money, and time down the road.

So consider this your sign. Start the conversation. Gather the documents. Get a plan in place. Your future self—and your entire family—will thank you.
